Stockholm Subway

Stockholm Subway

The Stockholm metro serves not just as a mode of transit but also as a tourist attraction. It spans 110 kilometers (68 miles) of tunnels and stations filled with stunning works of art, making it the world's longest art gallery.

In 1944, at the end of World War II, construction on the Stockholm subway system began. Since then, the subway network has expanded to cover nearly the entire city, identified by blue and white letter T markings at the stops.

Presently, the Stockholm subway comprises seven lines and over 100 stations. Quite a few of them can be considered genuine works of art.

The most beautiful subway stations in Stockholm

Even if your plan doesn't involve using Stockholm's public transport system, exploring the striking subway stations is well worth it. Local artists have spent years filling the subway tunnels with captivating paintings and carving sculptures into the walls. Each station boasts its own unique theme:

  • T-Centralen: This station serves as a pivotal hub for central Stockholm's main lines. It's adorned with white and blue tiles, creating lifelike vines on the ceiling and walls, a truly captivating sight.
  • Kungsträdgarden: This station emulates a genuine subway garden. It boasts a green-painted roof and a floor full of various shapes and shades, making it one of Stockholm's most enchanting stations.
  • Rådhuset: Hidden within this station is a cave-like ambiance, with earthy walls and a steep ceiling, resembling an authentic Viking cave, rendering it Stockholm's most surprising subway stop.
  • Thorildsplan: A beloved station for video game enthusiasts, this stop features wall tiles mimicking figures from '80s games like Pac-Man.
